I have always had a strong desire to help people and I find joy in connecting with individuals and having the opportunity to brighten their day or make a tough experience a little more manageable for them. Growing up, I loved listening to my mom tell stories of the time she spent in the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital while she was pregnant with me and my two siblings. She said that the nurses were always there for her every step of the way and when she was in their care she felt calm and totally confident in their abilities. Having the opportunity to work with the dedicated staff at MVH has affirmed my desire to become a Registered Nurse.
I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Simmons College. The intensity of the curriculum can be overwhelming but my strong desire and passion for a nursing career has helped me get through tough challenges and exams. During my summer internships at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, under the mentorship of Angela Rhoderick, I have had the opportunity to work in the Skilled Nursing Facility where I assisted in providing care to rehabilitation, infusion and dialysis patients, a Pediatrics Practice, where I provided support and care to pediatric patients. I have enjoyed the fast pace and unpredictability of the Emergency Department at a time of year to expect the unexpected. The wide variety of situations and patients was fascinating. Simply witnessing the quiet choreography of the staff was an education in professionalism. I have also spent time on the acute care floor and had the opportunity to work with nursing staff that is compassionate not only to their patients but to the families as well.
This past June, with the generosity of the Fellowship, I took a class to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. This will allow me to assist the nurses in Acute Care and gain more experience with one on one contact with patients. The skills I learn while being a CNA will enhance my clinicals and studies at Simmons as I enter my Junior year.
All of my experiences at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital have opened my eyes to the need for a healthy and educated population regarding health management and lifestyle choice. I look forward to learning as much as I can under the watchful and caring direction of the finest this community has to offer.
